There is something wonderfully simple about a game night.
No screens required. No complicated agenda. Just a table, a few games, some snacks, a little friendly competition, and a whole lot of laughter.
That is the heart behind New Brighton Methodist Church’s Good Old-Fashioned Family Game Night — a chance for friends, families, neighbors, and church family to gather for an evening of fun and fellowship.
We will be playing everything from old favorites to new classics, so whether you are a master strategist, a card shark, a dice roller, a trivia buff, or someone who just likes to sit nearby and laugh at everyone else’s competitive side, there will be a place for you.
A Little Game Night Trivia
Board games have been bringing people together for generations. Some of the games we think of as “modern classics” actually have surprisingly deep roots.
For example, Chutes and Ladders has roots that trace back to ancient India, long before it became a familiar family game in American homes. The Strong National Museum of Play even highlights those ancient roots as part of its board game history exhibits.
And then there is Candy Land, a game many children first learn because it does not require reading. Players simply draw color cards and move to matching color spaces, helping little ones practice taking turns, recognizing colors, and following directions.
Some games are so beloved that they have earned a place in the National Toy Hall of Fame. Classics like Monopoly, Checkers, Scrabble, Candy Land, and Clue have all been recognized over the years for their lasting impact on play and family fun.
Even newer favorites have become part of the wider game-night tradition. The Strong Museum’s Hasbro Game Park features and celebrates games such as Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, Jenga, Scrabble, The Game of Life, and Simon, showing how games continue to evolve while still bringing people together around the same basic idea: shared fun.
Why Game Night Still Matters
In a busy world, it is easy for families and friends to spend time in the same room without really spending time together. Game night slows things down.
It gives grandparents and grandkids something to laugh about together. It gives neighbors a chance to become friends. It gives kids a chance to learn patience, teamwork, and maybe how to lose gracefully — although we make no promises once the Monopoly board comes out.
Most of all, it gives us a chance to enjoy one another.
That is what fellowship is really about. It is not complicated. It is sharing life, sharing laughter, and making room at the table.
